Handsworth Library will host Birmingham's first official celebration of Punjabi women's festival Teeyan later this month.

Traditionally celebrated just before the monsoon season in India, Teeyan is a celebration from the Punjab encompassing dance, singing and music. This is the first time Birmingham Library Services has celebrated the festival.

Scheduled for Wednesday July 22 (2-5pm) the event is open to women from all communities and will feature specialist Punjabi Giddha dance troupe the Dhesi Divas.

Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sports and Culture, said: “This is yet another example of the wonderful ethnic diversity found here in Birmingham and promises to be a great event.

“In recent months we've celebrated Vaisakhi and St George's Day, while Birmingham Eid Mela takes place at Kings Heath Park next weekend. These events bring communities together across the city and Teeyan is a welcome addition to the calendar.”

Tickets for this free event are available from Handsworth Library, Soho Road, Birmingham B21 9DP and Hawthorn House Library or via email from gurdyal.gandham@birmingham.gov.uk
