Rebuttal: EC claims on city council staff numbers

By on 01/07/2011 in Rebuttals

A story yesterday on the European Commission’s plan to reduce staffing numbers contained, by way of comparision, comments from the EC on the number of staff working for Birmingham City Council.

The numbers claimed by the EC are inaccurate, as evidenced by the council’s latest Workforce Data Report.

At the last count, the city council had a TOTAL headcount of 48,049, and not the “60,000” as has been asserted.

Furthermore, the figure of 48,049 includes schools staff, the vast majority of which are employed directly by schools and not the council.

It must also be remembered the non-schools staff, which total 21,276 provide essential day-to-day frontline services for a city with a population of more than one million.
