REBUTTAL – recycling rates for Birmingham

An article in today’s Birmingham Mail suggests that Birmingham’s 2014/15 recycling rate was the “lowest since records began”.

We would like to point out that in response to a written question tabled at this month’s Full Council meeting, the following answer was given on recycling rates for the city’s refuse collection service – showing that there have been much lower figures in the past (than those reported by the Government for 2014/15):

5.35% (1998/1999)
6.52% (1999/2000)
7.43% (2000/2001)
8.37% (2001/2002)
12.16% (2002/2003)
15.30% (2003/2004)
17.68% (2004/2005)
17.03% (2005/2006)
18.39% (2006/2007)
26.81% (2007/2008)
30.59% (2008/2009)
31.78% (2009/2010)
31.43% (2010/2011)
31.28% (2011/2012)
32.31% (2012/2013)
31.67% (2013/2014)
29.40% (2014/2015)

Note: National indicators were introduced at the end of 2007 and the reporting for the rate was carried out differently prior to this point.
