Response to Lords report on broadband services

A report has today (July 31) been published by the House of Lords Communications Committee into broadband access, and essentially concluded that too much focus is placed on connection speed rather than access for all.

Commenting on the report, Cllr James McKay, Cabinet Member for a Green, Safe and Smart city, said: “Closing  the digital divide is absolutely essential in ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens have online access to jobs, skills, education and training opportunities that many of us take for granted.

“Whilst Birmingham is a well connected city, with excellent broadband coverage, the real challenge is to drive take-up by our citizens and businesses, which we are doing by actively supporting the Government’s Go ON initiative and other targeted projects.

“However, to secure our future economic growth we need to ensure that our high tech and creative businesses and young enterpreneurs have access to affordable, ultrafast broadband speeds that will enable them to develop new waves of applications and services and compete in a world where instant communications and online collaboration will drive economic success.”
