Restaurant awards for going green

The city's most sustainable and environmentally-aware dining establishments were recognised for their efforts at the second annual Birmingham Green Restaurant Awards last night (June 6).

Organised by the Birmingham Environmental Partnership and sponsored by Veolia and Birmingham City Council, the awards saw prizes presented in four categories, along with an overall winner.

The Warehouse Cafe landed the top honour of winning the Green Restaurant of the Year award during a ceremony at the Council House, following in the footsteps of Moor Hall Hotel, overall winner when the awards were first presented in 2010.

Cllr Timothy Huxtable, Chairman of the Birmingham Environmental Partnership, said: “Birmingham is rightly renowned for the culinary quality of its diverse range of restaurants.

“The winners of this year's awards are amongst the very best of the best when it comes to the important issue of setting standards for sustainability.

“They should act as an inspiration for others to follow because the catering industry is one area in which we can make a real difference as we strive to make Birmingham as green as possible.”

Energy Reduction
Winner: Café Vite, ICC
Highly Commended: Aria Restaurant, Hyatt Hotel

Staff & Community
Winner: The Warehouse Café
Highly Commended: McDonald's, Yardley Wood

Winner: Opus Restaurant
Highly Commended: VMF (Villa Midlands Food), Aston Villa FC

The Green Restaurant of the Year (which honours the restaurant that has excelled in all four categories, or shown exemplary commitment to sustainability and the environment)

Notes to editors

1. The Birmingham Environmental Partnership is part of Be Birmingham, the city's Local Strategic Partnership.

Its main function is to bring together the public, private and voluntary sectors, to provide leadership and ensure joined-up working on environmental and sustainability issues.

These issues include the physical environment, climate change, waste, energy management, local biodiversity, and sustainable procurement.

The partnership's four main areas of activity are:
·    making Birmingham a cleaner city
·    reducing waste and increasing reuse and recycling
·    adapting to the inevitable impacts of climate change
·    working to reduce CO2 emissions
