Returning troops honoured

Troops from the 26th Regiment Royal Artillery – 'The West Midland Gunners' – will receive the freedom of Birmingham next week.

The regiment, recently back from operational duties in Afghanistan and Iraq will hold a freedom parade in Birmingham city centre on Wednesday July 22. They will be accompanied by The Band of Parachute Regiment.

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Michael Wilkes, will welcome the troops and said: “The people of Birmingham will be giving the warmest of welcomes to the 26th Regiment, Royal Artillery. The Regiment has given courageous service in both Afghanistan and Iraq and I am very proud to be granting them the Freedom of the City.”

Troops will assemble on Victoria Square at 11.25am and will be given the freedom of the city before marching through New St, Cannon St, Cherry St, Temple Row and Colmore Row before returning to Victoria Square.
