Royal Sutton Coldfield Athletics Club rebuttal

With reference to inaccurate reports in today's Birmingham Post and Mail: ‘Council's 260% rent rise is a hammer blow for athletes’, we would like to point out that the proposed rent increase for the Royal Sutton Coldfield Athletics Club is from £5,000 to £6,000 - not the £18,000 reported.

The following facts were given to the Post and Mail reporter.

The club enjoyed a concessionary rate for 10 years in return for the role they played in facility improvements. That concessionary rate came to an end in January 2010.

Negotiations have been ongoing with the club since June 2010 and we are optimistic a deal has now been struck that will see the club pay £6,000 in the current financial year.

There is no evidence of any rent freeze until 2021 - Cllr Ian Ward even attended a meeting to tell club officials that he had no record or recollection of any such agreement.

This year's fees of £6,000 equate to around £30-an-hour. In 1995 the club paid £33-an-hour.
