One of the country's largest Christmas programmes begins this weekend in Birmingham when Father Christmas and his reindeers switch on the city's Christmas Lights.

Birmingham Christmas Parade is on Saturday 10 November at 5.30pm. A key highlight will be the nativity, with scene stealing donkey and camels for the three kings (magi). Local school children will portray Mary and Joseph and lead the parade through the streets of the city creating an impressive sight.

The Lord Mayor, Cllr John Lines will join Father Christmas with a party of elves on his sleigh. Before and after the parade, visitors will be able to get close to the reindeer, camels and donkey in petting pens situated in Chamberlain Square.

The parade will also include a float from Birmingham REP theatre with characters from their Christmas production of The Wind in the Willows, the 12 days of Christmas with maids milking, lords leaping and pipers drumming.

Characters from Madagascar Live! including penguins and King Julien will also star in the parade. Snowmen, Jack Frosts, stilt walking Christmas trees, roller skating puddings, baubles and Christmas crackers will add to the festive feel. Cinderella and Prince Charming will make an appearance in a Golden Coach with animatronic horses.

The parade will end in Victoria Square with attractions including a huge snow globe, carousel and Brass Band at around 7.00pm.

Starting at 4pm, temporary traffic restrictions around Birmingham city centre will be in place with roads re-opening as soon as the Parade has passed. Roads affected are: Colmore Row, Temple Row West, Temple Row, Cherry Street, Corporation Street and Bull Street.

The Parade line-up and timings are correct at time of going to press but may be subject to change. For further details please visit: www.birmingham.gov.uk/christmas
