Birmingham City Council's BEST Programme has scooped a top national award in recognition of its efforts in working with employees to improve services to the citizens of Birmingham.

The programme, launched in 2007, won the Municipal Journal (MJ) Award for People and Workforce Achievement.

Judges were looking for outstanding examples of potentially difficult issues that have been worked through to maximise staff commitment and performance.

And BEST landed the prize at a London Hilton awards ceremony, hosted by BBC newsreader Huw Edwards.

The BEST Programme team were joined by Chief Executive Stephen Hughes and Cllr Alan Rudge Cabinet Member for Equalities and HR.

Cllr Rudge, who is also Cabinet Sponsor for BEST, said: “I am delighted at the national recognition that this project has received as BEST contributes to Birmingham City Council's efficiencies agenda and commitment to serve the public and improve services. It also demonstrates the passion and pride that our employees have in making this happen.”

Since the design and implementation of the BEST Programme in 2007, over 23,000 members of staff have been through a BEST Workshop, led by 1,800 trained BEST Leaders.

This has resulted in over 6,000 actions across the Council focusing on improving customer service and service delivery.

Now in their sixth year, The MJ Awards were established to publicly recognise and promote achievement in local government services.
