St Patricks Day Parade to welcome the Olympics

In preparation for this years sport themed St Patrick's Day Parade local school children display their own Olympic torches as they prepare to welcome American and Jamaican athletes later this year when they arrive in the city ahead of the Olympic Games.

The local school pupils from St. Vincent’s School, Nechells have made their own Olympic torches in preparation for London 2012 that they will be taking to the annual event on Sunday 11 March.  The five pupils will be joined at the Birmingham Irish Centre by St Patrick (as performed by Len Cale), piano accordion player Mark McCabe of the Father Ted's and Shanice Meddings from the Kenny School of Irish Dancing will also be there in full costume.

There will be a sporting theme to this year's St Patrick's Day Parade.  This year's parade will be led by seven flag bearers that will include representatives from the Gaelic Athletics Association in Birmingham, Erin Go Bragh's Hurling and Camogie (an Irish stick-and-ball team sport played by women) teams, Na Madrai Golf Society, Birmingham Irish Rugby Club, John Mitchel's Football Team, Friends of the Earth Cycling Team and Small Heath Boxing Club.

The parade begins at 12noon on Sunday 11 March from Camp Hill, before following Digbeth High Street past traditional Irish pubs, ending on Alcester Street.
