Team GB badminton squad prepare for Rio in Brum

Team GB badminton squad training for Rio 2016 at Barclaycard Arena

Team GB’s badminton squad and some of Europe’s finest players were preparing for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena this week.

Cllr Ian Ward, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, met some of the players during a break in training earlier today (21 July 2016), including Kirsty Gilmour and Rajiv Ouseph, to wish them well in Rio.

The training camp was arranged at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, home of the Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships, to give Team GB’s players the opportunity to train with many of Europe’s top players from across all five events.

Cllr Ward, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “I am glad to see Team GB’s badminton squad have chosen to base their Olympic training camp at the Barclaycard Arena, as Birmingham offers first class sports preparation facilities.

“I wish Team GB all the very best for the Olympics in Rio, and I look forward to welcoming the players back to the city for the Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships in March 2017, hopefully with a few Olympic medals.

“If you’re inspired by our Olympic stars, you can play badminton and other racket sports for free in Birmingham this summer - thanks to our Wot a Racket initiative. To find out more go to www.sportbirmingham.org/wot-a-racket.”

The training camp was held at the Barclaycard Arena from 19-21 July 2016.
