The incredible wealth and breadth of artistic talent in the West Midlands region will be revealed in the West Midlands Open 2010 exhibition at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery's Gas Hall from 6 March until 2 May.

An independent panel of judges had the difficult task of selecting the final 146 artworks that will go on public display from over 1,200 entries that were submitted by over 500 regionally based artists.  Both professional and amateur artists will be showcased at the exhibition which will include drawing, sculpture, photography, prints and audio visual work.

The panel of judges consisted of Lubaina Himid – Professor of Contemporary Art at University of Central Lancashire, the artist Harminder Singh Judge and curator Alex Boyd – curator at the Oriel Davies Gallery in Powys, Wales. The names of the three works that have won first, second and third prizes of £1000, £500 and £250 respectively will be announced at the launch of the exhibition on 4 March.

Councillor Martin Mullaney, Birmingham City Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, said: “The huge response of artists to submit work for the West Midlands Open, has shown that there is a wealth of talent in the region.   It is great that, with the Gas Hall at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham can offer these artists such a prestigious venue to show their work.”

The West Midlands Open exhibition will also offer an opportunity to purchase the original artwork on display which buyers will be able to take home when the exhibition closes.
