Tip top toes with new Nail Care service

By on 30/06/2009 in News

Residents will be kept on their toes with today’s launch of a new Nail Care service from NHS South Birmingham.

The Nail Care service will provide accessible, safe and affordable basic foot care to people who are unable to care for their own feet and nails. The service will be available to anyone who wishes to purchase it, including those with learning and physical disabilities.

NHS South Birmingham has worked closely with; older people's groups from across the City, the Adults and Communities Directorate of Birmingham City Council, South Birmingham Primary Care Trust's Podiatry Department and a number of other agencies in Birmingham to develop this new service.

This new service aims to support people in maintaining a fit and active lifestyle, particularly those with long term conditions like diabetes. Healthy feet can help prevent falls, and Nail Care therapists have also been trained to direct clients to an NHS podiatrist, nurse or their own GP if their feet show any signs of other infections or unreported conditions.
A celebratory event is also being held today to recognise 12 Nail Care therapy students who will be receiving their certificates after completing a  course at Sutton Coldfield and Matthew Boulton College.

The students who are qualifying this week are either independent or come from local pharmacies or voluntary sector organisations. From mid-July they will be delivering the new Nail Care Service from the following sites:

  • Balsall Heath Day Centre, Clevedon Road
  • Feet First, at All Saints Centre
  • Wake Green Road, Moseley
  • Lloyds Pharmacies, Yardley Wood Road, Billesley
  • Vicarage Road Kings Heath
  • Pershore Road, Cotteridge
  • GR Pharmacy, Northfield
  • Jiggins Lane Pharmacy, Bartley Green
  • Noor Pharmacy, Waterworks Road
  • through Mencap and Age Concern, Perry Barr
