Twitter gritter goes regional

Unlike a year ago when we were already shivering in sub-zero temperatures, winter has not yet properly arrived here in the West Midlands. But we all know it won’t be long before the gritters are out in force.

And this year we want to build on the gritting alert service that local authorities across the region have offered in recent years.

So we’ve joined forces with colleagues in Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Solihull to bring together the gritting alerts and related news from across the West Midlands.

The Highways Agency has also signed-up for the #wmgrit initiative so we can include information regarding the motorway network.

Our aim is to make it easier for people travelling across more than one local authority in the region – it may be reassuring to know the gritters have been out in Birmingham but if you’re travelling to Telford, you also want to know about the roads for your entire journey.

Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Transport, Environment and Regeneration, Cllr Timothy Huxtable, said: “Our gritting crews are on hand throughout the winter to keep the city moving and for the last two years we've tweeted gritting information to keep the public informed.

“I know from feedback that our gritting alerts do prove extremely useful and reassuring and this is the logical next step.

“By working closely with colleagues across the region we can pull together information covering roads treated by a number of West Midlands authorities.”

So now, if you’re commuting from Digbeth to Darlaston or Billesley to Bilston you can quickly check where the roads have been gritted en route.
