British gymnast Becky Downie will officially launch the UEG European Gymnastics Championships on Thursday as tickets for the event go on sale to the public.

Becky is the current British Senior Champion and her finish of 12th at the Beijing Olympics last year is the best ever performance by a British Gymnast in Olympic history, she is being tipped to improve on that performance in three years time at the London 2012 Olympics.  Aged 17, she competes on four pieces of apparatus - vault, bars, beam and floor.

Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said “It’s fantastic that yet another major sporting event is coming to Birmingham.  We are proud to be welcoming the best gymnasts in Europe to the city for what will be two weeks of superb competition.  As we get closer to London 2012, the gymnasts will hopefully enjoy a taste of what will be coming in London in three years time.”

The European Gymnastics Championships will be held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham from 22 April to 2 May 2010 and more than 800 of Europe's best gymnasts from 40 countries are expected to compete.

The event comprises two weeks of competition with artistic gymnastics competitions for men, women and teams at both senior and junior level.

A short speech will be made by Paul Garber, president of British Gymnastics and vice president of the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) before one to one interviews with Paul and Becky and photo/filming opportunities.
