The Express and Star is offering schools the opportunity to write, illustrate and design the front and back cover of special edition of the newspaper and to see their work roll off the presses.

The competition, which is open to pupils in Birmingham and the wider region aged 11 to 16, will form part of Birmingham's bid for the title of UK City of Culture 2013.

Birmingham is one of four cities shortlisted for the title of UK City of Culture 2013. If Birmingham wins, it will raise the city's profile in the national media and give a boost to tourism and the local economy worth an estimated £200million.

2013 in Birmingham will be a year long celebration of culture with a programme of events for local people and visitors to enjoy. This could include film making, music, dance, arts, poetry, sculpture and photography – with young people leading on some of the programming.

Through this competition, we want young people growing up in and around Birmingham to tell us why they think Birmingham deserves to win the title of UK City of Culture, what cultural activities they enjoy doing now and what they would like to see happening as part of the celebrations in 2013.

Culture means different things to different people. It might be visiting the theatre, library or museum or going to an outdoor music festival, playing an instrument, singing, dancing, painting, digital media, photography, film making, arts and crafts or creative writing.

Groups of school pupils aged 11 to 16 are invited to write, illustrate and design the front and back page of a special City of Culture 2013 edition of the Express and Star. They will be invited to the Express and Star to meet journalists and to see their newspaper run off the presses.

Entries must be submitted electronically saved as a pdf and the finished measurement for each page is 31 cm wide by 35 cm deep. Final artwork is required with finished stories and photographs laid out and ready to print.

Closing date for entries is Friday 14th May.

The judges' decision is final. The winners will be notified and invited to visit the Express and Star during the week of 24 May to see their newspaper being printed. Winners will be required to participate in publicity opportunities.
