Update on Alnwick House

By on 29/03/2010 in News

Following the Sunday Mercury’s coverage of a story relating to a Birmingham City Council tenant, find updated statement below:

A BCC spokesperson said:

“Mr Shemsin is not a tenant of Birmingham City Council, he is a visitor to Alnwick House.

“Following the attack, he was prevented from visiting the block under bail conditions, however, when the case came to court, whilst convicted of the attack, an exclusion order that was imposed allows him to continue to visit Alnwick House up to the second floor.

“We are concerned that Birmingham City Council was not consulted as part of the pre sentencing report as we would have expected.

“We accept that Mr Shemsin’s presence at Alnwick House is distressing for our tenant, we are therefore seeking an Injunction to exclude him from the block.

“We have also agreed to rehouse our tenant and have previously offered her temporary accommodation as an interim measure, which she declined to accept.

“We are doing all that we can to resolve this unsatisfactory situation which is not a problem of our making but a consequence of the decision of the Crown Court.”
