Waste management company given 2 week ultimatum

A waste management company in Hockley who have breached planning consent conditions have been given an ultimatum by Councillor Peter Douglas Osborn, Chairman of the Planning Committee at Birmingham City Council.

Alpha Wastecare Ltd, situated at 363 Park Road, Hockley, was recently granted planning consent for various works on the site, with the conditions attached that a trommel sorting machine should not be used until works to enclose it have been fully completed, and also that the trommel sorting machine should not be used until the roof structure over the open waste storage area has been completed. This is to minimise any disruption caused to residents as the trommel sorting machine emits significant noise and dust.

The company have begun the enclosure works to the trommel sorting machine, and have advised that it will take 3 months to complete the works to the open storage area, including obtaining building regulations approval for the new roof structure.

Following complaints from residents that the company has proceeded with the development in breach of these requirements, Councillor Peter Douglas Osborn has given them a two week deadline to complete the work to the trommel sorting machine. The City Council will continue to monitor progress at the site, and will proceed to pursue enforcement action should this be deemed necessary.

Councillor Peter Douglas Osborn comments:

“I am very concerned by any potential inconvenience to neighbours, and by any breach of planning conditions. The council are putting Alpha Wastecare under a microscope and taking a keen interest in their progress. The planning committee has empowered me to take whatever sanctions are necessary to make sure that planning conditions are adhered to.”

Alpha Wastecare have argued that the trommel sorting machine has to remain in use as it is essential to maintaining a financially viable business and the retention of 62 existing jobs.
