Wear your poppy with pride

Message from the Lord Mayor of Birmingham

poppyThis year sees the 91st anniversary of the Royal British Legion. Since 1921 the Royal British Legion has delivered a caring service for the benefit of those in need from the ex-service community. Last year the Poppy Appeal raised over £36m nationally.

This year’s Poppy Appeal target for 2012 is a record-breaking £42 million, with all the money raised going towards the Legion’s vital support for members of the Armed Forces and their families in need. The Legion has flexible and wide ranging support to help every generation of the Armed Forces community, and estimates almost 9 million people in the UK are eligible for help.

With conflict continuing at its current intensity it is inevitable that this number will continue to rise and the Royal British Legion intend to be there for these service men and women and their families today and for the rest of their lives.

So please join me on Remembrance Day on Sunday 11th November when I will have the privilege of leading the City's Annual Service and Parade on Centenary Square.

I encourage you all to buy poppies, wear them with pride and give generously to this year's appeal, we will remember them all.

Councillor John Lines
Lord Mayor of Birmingham
