West Midlands Rail Services Under Government Control

A significant shift in the operation of rail services has taken place in the West Midlands, with West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway now under public ownership.

The change, which came into effect on 1 February 2026, makes West Midlands Trains the fourth rail operator to be brought under government control following the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024. It's estimated that half of all rail journeys that Great British Railways will eventually oversee are now on publicly owned services.

Rail services are now operated by WM Trains Limited, a subsidiary of DfT Operator Limited (DFTO), which is the government body responsible for managing publicly owned train companies.

No Immediate Changes for Passengers

West Midlands Railway serves numerous destinations across the region, utilising Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Snow Hill stations. London Northwestern Railway operates routes between Liverpool, Birmingham, and London Euston.

Passengers have been assured that the transition will not lead to any disruptions to their daily commutes. Existing timetables, stations, and ticket conditions will remain unchanged, and all existing rail staff will continue in their current roles.

Fare Freeze Announced

Adding to the positive news for commuters, rail fares are set to be frozen for a year starting in March 2026. This marks the first fare freeze in 30 years and is expected to provide much-needed financial relief for households in Birmingham and across the West Midlands, as they continue to grapple with the ongoing cost of living pressures.

The Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has expressed its support for the transfer, highlighting the importance of reliable and affordable rail links for the region's economic prosperity.

The government has indicated that bringing West Midlands Trains into public ownership is a vital step towards providing a better and more dependable railway for passengers. This development means that half of all rail journeys now operate under public ownership, prioritising passengers and ensuring the railway operates in the public interest.

This transfer follows similar actions with other rail operators across the country, as the government progresses towards the establishment of Great British Railways, a new public body that will oversee the entire national rail network.
