Wheelie bin roadshow dates announced

***May 1 update – edited with extra Brandwood locations and some altered times***

Residents of Brandwood and Harborne have the chance to learn more about the wheelie bin pilot schemes coming to their streets during a roadshow tour which starts next week.

From May 6 to June 1, the council will be staging a series of events across the two wards to field questions and ensure citizens are fully prepared for the roll out of the bins.

Deliveries of the bins are due to start in Brandwood on the week commencing May 27, while bins will start being distributed in Harborne on the week commencing June 10. Bin collections will begin in both wards a week after delivery - meaning the roadshows come at an ideal time for people to learn more about the scheme.

Cllr James McKay, Cabinet Member for a Green, Safe and Smart City said: “The plans to introduce wheelie bins are coming along well, and they’ll give Birmingham cleaner streets and a waste collection service we can afford. This series of events is a great way for people to learn more about the improvements to the way in which we collect their waste.

“The feedback so far has been encouraging, so this offers everyone in Brandwood and Harborne a chance to see the bins for themselves and ask any questions that they may have.

“We know that refuse collection is one of the most important universal services that we provide, so we are keen to ensure we keep residents updated on every step we take to modernise our refuse collection services, and make them affordable going forward.”

I live in a terraced street with no access to the rear and nowhere to hide these bins except in my 2 metre square front garden. The result will be wheelie bins on show all the time. The estate agent I talked with says that such a road will likely see a fall in house prices due to their perceived ‘inner city’ look. On the other hand, people with garages will see no such impact. It seems highly unfair that those of us in generally poorer areas without garages will suffer whilst the more affluent will not.

Can someone inform us on which date/s Cllr.McKay will be attending the Harborne Roadshows ? I hope he will there for most of them and I do hope that the re-assessment of the small terraced houses with small front gardens is progressing nicely as we asked.

Cllr McKay will attend at least one of the Harborne roadshows (not sure which yet)
Officers will also be on hand to answer questions and listen to issues raised by residents.
