The shortlist of the 2010 Best Bar None awards has been announced.

The city-wide scheme, now in its third year, promotes a safer and more responsible pub culture in the city, by rewarding good management which discourages binge-drinking and helps to prevent alcohol related crime.

Winners will be announced at the Awards ceremony on Thursday 16th September at the ICC.

Bacardi Brown Forman is the principal sponsor of the scheme, a partnership between Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Fire Service and West Midlands Police.

The scheme, supported by the Home Office, the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) and the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) assesses Birmingham's pubs, clubs and bars on criteria such as; door and security policies, drugs issues, under-age drinking and how to deal with abusive customers, as well as what systems are in place to deal with alcohol related crime.

This year there is also a Birmingham Choice Award, where members of the public can vote for their favourite venue via the BRMB radio website.

Jacqui Kennedy, Director of Regulatory Services, said:

“This event is like the Oscars of pub management in the city. It has been a very hard job to shortlist, as the standard of the entrants has been extremely high. We are all eagerly awaiting the results on 16th September”.

Last year saw 99 Birmingham venues accredited to the Best Bar None scheme's standard, more than any other participating Local Authority in the country.

Those places that are accredited to the scheme - even if they don't win an award - will receive a Best Bar None plaque to display in their premises.
