Wholesale market relocation

Deputy leader of Birmingham City Council Ian Ward said:

“We have thoroughly analysed a range of options on the relocation of the wholesale market and it is anticipated that a move to the Hub at Witton will be the preferred option put to cabinet.

“I made a commitment to secure the future of the wholesale market when I first came to office and this relocation will see that future secured.

“While we have no statutory duty to provide a wholesale market it is important to the local economy and the food supply chain which is why I've been determined to drive through this relocation. However, as it will be supported by taxpayers' money we have to ensure value for money whilst making it affordable and sustainable for the traders.

“A modern purpose built market will provide the wholesale traders the opportunity to invest and generate new forms of business in a location that offers excellent access to local and national opportunities”

“There will also be an opportunity for market traders to have a close involvement in the future management of the wholesale markets.

“I have continued to have discussions with representatives from the retail markets and one of the central principles of this process is that the move is not detrimental to their business.”

Finalising our position on this important decision has involved extensive negotiations with developers and landowners as well as many discussions with the wholesale and other market traders. The Cabinet report will be finalised next week.
