Cabinet is being asked to approve a revised document setting out how the wider Selly Oak, including parts of Bournville and south Edgbaston will be developed.
The Wider Selly Oak Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), which replaces the Selly Oak Local Action Plan, sets out the vision and strategy for development in the area.
Key projects included in the document include a life sciences campus on the Birmingham Battery Park site; redevelopment of the former Selly Oak Hospital site for housing and public open space; the completion of Selly Oak New Road, and measures to address issues relating to homes in multiple occupation (HMO), together with the identification of sites for purpose built student accommodation.
Formal consultation into a draft version of the SPD took place between July and October last year and the majority of the policies and proposals within it received good levels of support. Concerns, however, were raised over the impact of the large numbers of students living in the area, as well as traffic issues.
The SDP has since been amended to include guidance reflecting these concerns. This includes a commitment to complete the Selly Oak New Road.
Cllr Tahir Ali, Cabinet Member for Development, Transport and the Economy, said: “This is an extremely important planning document, not just because it sets out guidance for the future development and prosperity of the wider Selly Oak area, but also because it has been amended to reflect the concerns raised during the consultation, demonstrating the importance of people having their say in shaping their local community.”
Cabinet will consider the report at its meeting on Monday, June 29.
