lm-blogLord Mayor of Birmingham Michael Wilkes officially opens Birmingham's world famous Frankfurt Christmas Market this evening - with the stalls opening for business at 10am. And he is proud to welcome back one of the city's most popular annual events.

You know the festive season is fast approaching in Birmingham when people start talking about Glüwein, grilled sausages and German beer.

Yes the Frankfurt Christmas Market is back - bigger and brighter than ever before.

This evening I officially launch Birmingham's annual six-week Christmas party and I know many of you have been counting down the days to the opening.

I'm proud of the fact that we host the largest German Christmas Market staged outside Germany and Austria and I know many people in Birmingham share that pride. The Frankfurt Christmas Market is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year in Birmingham.

The event has grown from strength to strength over the last nine years and brings a huge number of visitors to Birmingham every year. Many of the stallholders return from Germany year after year because they're assured a warm welcome and the market is a real symbol of our longstanding friendship and partnership with the city of Frankfurt.

I'm sure many of you will be heading for the market over the next few days and we can once again expect a huge number of visitors from outside the city as the Frankfurt Christmas Market continues to be an event we can all be proud of.
