Workforce figures – a clarification

Today’s Birmingham Post contains an article headlined “14,000 council jobs axed in two years”.

This claim is incorrect.

The following Workforce Data scrutiny reports (June 2009) and (September 2011) show the following:

The council’s core headcount (including sessional and casual workers) in 2009 was 61,695
The council’s core headcount (including sessional and casual workers) in 2011 (as of July 31) was 56,148

This is a difference of 5,547 and NOT “more than 14,000″ as has been asserted.

The Birmingham Post article (based on these very scrutiny reports) also states “a further 2,450 posts are likely to be made redundant this year”.

The same scrutiny report presented to members this week shows that by July 31 of this year a total of 2,123 workers have left the authority.

These 2,123 are part of that 2,450 planned reduction – and it must also be noted that just 117 of these have been compulsory redundancies.
