An exciting new apprenticeship scheme in Selly Oak is providing valuable work experience for young people in the area as well as helping to improve the local environment.

Thanks to the Working Neighbourhood Fund (WNF) from Be Birmingham and the Future Jobs Fund (FJF), an Environmental Apprenticeship Scheme was launched last month, running for six months and offering thirty trainees valuable, paid work-experience at the Selly Oak canal.

The trainees, all young, unemployed residents from the local area, will gain valuable hands-on experience undertaking a range of tasks including landscaping, painting, repairs and general maintenance, for which they will be paid.

This project is one of several initiated by Birmingham City Council's Selly Oak Constituency  Employment, Regeneration and Commissioning Group, and is an excellent example of partnership working across different organisations including Be Birmingham, British Waterways, Groundwork and Jobcentre Plus.

Councillor Timothy Huxtable, Cabinet Member for Transportation & Regeneration, said: “This project is the result of a lot of hard work by all of the partners.

“As well as the environmental benefits for canal users and local residents, the legacy of the project will be that thirty local young people will benefit from the opportunity to gain valuable paid work experience, as well as achieving qualifications and enhancing their long term job prospects.”
