Details: Birmingham's fifth annual German Winefest gets underway.

German Wine Queen Sonja Christ is in Birmingham on Thursday August 19 as the city's German Winefest 2010 gets underway.

The 25-year-old wine-grower’s daughter from the Mosel will be joined by Deputy Lord and Lady Mayoress, Cllr Michael Wilkes and Mrs Vivienne Wilkes, as the 12-day celebration of German food and wine gets underway.

Returning for the fifth year, the German Winefest showcases delicious red, white and sparkling wines from Germany's 13 wine growing regions. Visitors can buy their favourites by the glass, bottle or case.

The Winefest is brought to Birmingham by Herr Amin Rupp who is the Frankfurt City Council’s Winemaster.

Wine buffs will also be able to increase their knowledge of German wines with information available on producer profiles, history of wine growing in the regions, the winemaking process, wine stems and grape varieties.

German Winefest 2010 runs from August 19-30 and stalls are open from 11am to 10pm daily.

And, as a warm-up for the city's hugely popular Frankfurt Christmas Market, the event will also feature German food stalls serving up charcoal-barbecued sausages and other tasty favourites.

The food and wine will be complimented by a varied programme of live music throughout the day.

Sonja Christ, a 25-year-old MBA graduate and wine-grower’s daughter from Oberfell (between Koblenz and Cochem on the Mosel), was elected German Wine Queen in October 2009.

She is be the ambassador of German wine-growers and their products, appearing at 250 events in Germany and abroad during her year as Wine Queen.

She will be available for interviews and photographs on Thursday.

The festival was great. I really enjoyed the food and was impressed with some of the wines.

Any chance of expanding it next year?
