Visit Birmingham - you’d be silly not to
Cllr Martin Mullaney, cabinet member for Leisure, Sports and Culture on reports that Birmingham is an increasingly popular tourist destination.
News that a growing number of people are choosing to visit Birmingham for an overnight stay came as absolutely no surprise to me.
Birmingham is a city worth visiting and last year a massive 2,374,000 did just that – making us, according to research carried out by VisitEngland, the third most popular city in England.
So why visit Birmingham?
How long have you got?
The nightlife and shopping speak for themselves and, though I might be seen as a little biased, we’re justifiably seen as a cultural capital for the region.
I have been the Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture for little over a month and am currently enjoying a whistle-stop tour of this city’s many cultural assets.
We have a world class museum and gallery – the Matthew Boulton bicentenary exhibition and Obama’s People are particularly worth visiting at the moment.
The Birmingham Royal Ballet, one of the world’s greatest concert halls and a world class and internationally recognised symphony orchestra.
The first ever International Food Fair proved to be a huge success last week, while the Monarch Beach in Chamberlain Square is enjoying its best ever year.
There’s something for everyone and Birmingham wouldn’t be half the place it is without our tremendously varied cultural offer. Art and culture form an important element of the ongoing regeneration of this city.
The VisitEngland figures show that a growing number of people outside this city are starting to realise what we’ve known for a long time – Birmingham is a great place to visit.

A great reason to visit the city in July is the Birmingham International Jazz Festival http://tinyurl.com/m75rhw . From 3rd July to 12th July there’ll be 180 perfomances taking place in 70 venues and 90% of the shows are completely free.
