Major regeneration project for Aston

A major regeneration project which will see the creation of 3,000 jobs and the redevelopment of 20 hectares of land in Aston is to be put before the council's cabinet on 30th July.

The Regional Investment Site is the key proposal within the Aston, Newtown and Lozells Area Action Plan which was adopted by the council earlier this month.

The Regional Investment Site has been designated as the city's Advanced Manufacturing Hub and is expected to attract companies in the growing automotive sector building on the recent investments announced by Jaguar Land Rover and BMW. The development, near Salford Lake, will create a high quality business park for new companies to move into the city, or for the expansion of the city's existing businesses.

Working in partnership with the Homes & Communities Agency, and supported by the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, the Regional Investment Site will be brought forward over the next 15 years, with the first phase of 10 hectares of land being available for development between 2012 and 2015.

Councillor Tahir Ali, cabinet member for development, jobs and skills, said: “The economic regeneration of the wider area will be secured through the creation of new jobs at the Aston Regional Investment Site, capitalising on the area's strategic location and proximity to the motorway network.

“This important regeneration project will see the area undergo a huge transformation, with the creation of new jobs, particularly in growth sectors such as automotive and aerospace engineering, providing better choice and quality of employment. We will support existing businesses and industry and improve access to employment and training for local residents so that they can benefit from these new opportunities.”
