National award win is no fake for Trading Standards team

Dedicated Trading Standards staff that stop counterfeit good across the city have been recognised for their work at the 2013 Anti-Counterfeiting Group Awards.

This week the council's Specialist Services Team - part of Trading Standards - was recognised for exceptional achievements in anti-counterfeiting. The council was the overall department winner in this category.

Jacqui Kennedy, Director of Regulation and Enforcement, said: “I am very proud of what we as a team have achieved, winning this award is a fantastic accomplishment for the department and the City Council.

“This award recognises the hard work that has been put in by council staff who work tirelessly putting a stop to the sale of counterfeit goods across the city. The Team consistently provide a top quality service and make the best use of all available resources to achieve great results within anti-counterfeiting.”

As the winner of the award the Specialist Services Team received a certificate and £500.00 to be set against TSI courses, surveillance equipment, satellite navigations units, digital cameras or IT equipment.

Throughout the year, the Team has investigated 221 complaints of counterfeiting relating to various household products, including: clothing, DVDs, alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, computer software and car parts.

A total of 85,051 items have been seized suspected of being counterfeit with a street value of £3,050,234. Goods have been seized from street sellers, retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers and importers leading to 19 formal interventions.

The team protects businesses and communities by combating the manufacture, sale and supply of counterfeit consumer goods.

The awards took place in Brighton on Wednesday 19 June 2013.
