A housing development in Ladywood built through the city council’s house building arm has been handed over to tenants.

Built through the Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust (BMHT) by Galliford Try Partnerships, the £2.67m development of 45 properties will include 23 properties for affordable rent.

New tenant Mohamed Albabili said: “I used to live in a tower block which was not ideal, so I am very happy to be living in a nice new council house which is much better for me and my family – especially as it is close to some of my family.”

The development in Monument Road comprises 2  bedroom flats, and both 3 and 4 bedroom houses with at least one parking space per property.

Councillor Tahir Ali, cabinet member for development, transport and the economy, said: “This development contributes towards our drive to increase the number of homes in Birmingham and close the housing gap for the city. Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust is doing great work in providing high quality homes, where they are needed the most, and the benefits are there for all to see.”

Councillor John Cotton, cabinet member for neighbourhood management and homes said: “People deserve good quality homes, so I’m delighted that this development has replaced unpopular, poorly designed housing, with homes that residents want to live in and will enjoy for many years to come.”

James Warrington, managing director for Galliford Try Partnerships Central, said: “We are proud of our partnership with Birmingham City Council and are pleased to have built such a high quality scheme for Birmingham.”

The Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust Delivery Plan for 2015-2020 will deliver an estimated 2,056 homes, of which 1,456 will be new rented council homes. Through the BMHT, the city council has become the leading developer of new homes within the city, building more new homes than any other provider.
