New website promotes Perry Barr sport

A groundbreaking new website focussing on sporting groups in Perry Barr could soon be the model for promoting community sport across Birmingham.

That's the view of Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture Cllr Martin Mullaney, who has been hugely impressed with the Ice Sporting website (http://www.icesportn-hobham.co.uk) which was officially launched earlier this week.

The website was formed by a network of sports clubs and organisations in Perry Barr, known as the CSPAN (Community Sports, Physical Activities Network)

With a search facility listing sports clubs, facilities and groups in Perry Barr, the website will also promote other aspects of a healthy lifestyle with regular tips on nutrition and healthy eating.

Cllr Mullaney said: “This website is a fantastic resource for the people of Perry Barr and it's seen very much as a pilot project. I'm sure other constituencies will be looking on with interest.

“There is a wealth of sporting opportunities for people in Birmingham, whether you want to join an organised club or just get fit and lose a few pounds. Now the people of Perry Barr have this great website to help them get into sport.”

Cllr Paulette Hamilton (Handsworth Wood) added: “We have a large group of voluntary organisations that have come together to ensure that as a community we get the best possible physical activities. The website is a one-stop shop.”

The Perry Barr CSPAN is a voluntary organisation formed to promote, engage and encourage young people to be more physically activities by raising awareness of the facilities and services on offer.

Perry Barr Sports Development Manager Panikos Panayiotou, who worked on the development of CSPAN and the website, concluded: “Helping people lead more active lifestyles is a big challenge and we know there is a lot of interest in our work, not just across Birmingham, but in other parts of the UK.”

Organisers plan to promote the website with a tour of the constituency, offering young people a chance to engage in street sport and DJ workshops.
