Hitting back at ‘motoring’ slur

By DeborahH • June 26th, 2009

Cllr Len Gregory, Cabinet Member for Transportation and Street Service, responds to reports Birmingham motorists are being driven to despair.

He said: “It is absolute nonsense to suggest that Birmingham is a not a car-friendly city. We have a really good highway network and are not as congested as other cities.

“We put a lot of effort into improving the lot of motorists. We have a congestion taskforce who are working with businesses and other groups in the city all the time.

“In relation to petrol prices, that is not something we have any control over.  With parking, the private sector controls some spaces in the city centre as well as the city council.

“There is a wide range of parking options in the city from meter spaces to multi-storey carparks. Our charges are reasonable compared to other cities and we have special rates to encourage people to come to the city after 6pm - when parking is free - and on Sundays.

“Speed cameras are only put in place where there is a proven accident problem to reduce the number of people killed or injured on the roads.”
