Housing regeneration scheme re-launched by council
A major housing regeneration scheme which had been stalled due to lack of funding is set to be re-launched by the council.
The city council's cabinet today approved proposals for the development of up to 316 new homes built on cleared land on the Lyndhurst estate through the Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust.
Up to 50 per cent of the new homes will be new council homes for rent with the remainder being for sale. In addition the scheme will deliver a new neighbourhood park and enhanced play facilities on the Lyndhurst estate.
The council has also been successful in obtaining £1m in Growing Places funding from the Government to assist in providing funding for some of the new infrastructure to be provided on the estate. This funding must be repaid in full from the proceeds of the development.
Councillor Tahir Ali, cabinet member for development, jobs and skills, said: “The proposals for the regeneration of the Lyndhurst estate demonstrate the council's commitment to getting the city back to work by creating jobs in the construction industry and to tackling the inequalities and deprivation that affect many parts of the city.
“We are passionate about providing as many of the highest quality new homes as possible and ensuring that there is an adequate supply of new rented homes to meet the needs of those who cannot afford to buy in the current market.
“Not only will this scheme provide much needed new homes for rent and sale, but will also support the fabric of the local community by creating new play facilities, much needed new jobs in the construction industry and training opportunities for local young people.”
