Living History Day at Soho House
Costumed characters, historical musicians and a fascinating insight into domestic life during the Napoleonic Wars will all be part of a special free Living History Day at Soho House on Sunday 12 July (12noon – 4pm).
Visitors to the event will be able to meet the barber surgeon from the 1st Footguards Regiment. Barber-surgeons were medical practitioners who often performed surgery on the war wounded.
The barber surgeon will be bringing his apothecary box to the event, talking about healthcare in the army and how wounds were dressed and treated.
Throughout the day there will also be demonstrations of historical weapons and talks about life in the military from an officer of 3rd Battalion 95th Rifles.
Kitchen staff in period costume will be in the housekeeper’s room describing the food that would have been eaten at the time.
In Matthew Boulton’s bedroom, a regency lady will be discussing the domestic routines of the period, accompanied by her 2 year old who will be playing with toys of the period.
There will be live entertainment from costumed musicians performing popular songs and music from the period in the garden. The musicians will also be giving presentations to explain the historical context of the entertainment.
Family activities throughout the day will include a special Nelson Trail which commemorates Nelson’s visit to Boulton at Soho House in 1802. There will also be the chance to create fabric collage bunting with ‘Flag it up!’ a children’s craft activity workshop based on naval signal flags.
Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: “Living history days provide an entertaining way for the whole family to step back in time and experience scenarios from the past.
“Soho House is an ideal venue to hold this particular event as Nelson actually visited there, and it provides a fascinating link to all of the other Boulton celebrations taking place in Birmingham this year”.
The event is part of the bicentenary celebrations of Matthew Boulton and visitors to Soho House will also be able see ‘200 years in the Making: Celebrating Boulton in Contemporary Style’ (until 1 November).
The exhibition has been organised in conjunction with Sutton Coldfield and Matthew Boulton Colleges and includes 3D designs and models by BTEC national diploma students inspired by collections at Soho House.
The exhibition Matthew Boulton – Selling what all the world desires is at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery until 27th September 2009.
