Dream Teams  (The Guardian - Society Guardian, July 8 ) Sonia Mais-Rose is being hailed as the new face of the residential care home worker. She has worked for Birmingham City Council for more than half her life, always in residential care homes. But now she is at the forefront of changes that are supposed to revolutionise how the council provides care to older people.

Fifth of 11-year-olds ‘are obese’  (BBC)
At least a fifth of all 11-year-old children in five West Midlands boroughs are obese, according to NHS figures.The problem is worst in Sandwell, where 23.9% of children are obese. In Wolverhampton 22.3% of 11-year-olds are obese, in Birmingham the figure is 22.1%, in Dudley it is 20.1% and in Walsall the number is 20%.

City research into energy that’s not to be wasted (Birmingham Post, July 8 ) The West Midlands may not immediately stand out for its sources of renewable energy - we don’t have Scotland’s wind, California’s sun or the tidal resources of the coastal areas to harness for example.
