***May 5 update - deadline for entries extended to May 22***

Birmingham’s Sustainability & Recycling Awards have changed – to become broader in appeal they have now become the Making Birmingham Greener and Healthier Awards under the umbrella of Birmingham’s Green Commission.

Birmingham City Council, in partnership with environmental company Veolia, are inviting schools, colleges, universities, businesses (including food outlets) as well as community groups and growing projects to become Birmingham’s next “green” champions through the 2015 edition of the revamped awards.

Aiming to celebrate the green achievements of businesses, community groups and education establishments these awards will promote and celebrate sustainable development, sustainable travel, sustainability in business and health & wellbeing initiatives for people living and working within the city.

There are four main categories that entries are being welcomed in:

• Best Energy Efficiency Scheme
• Best Waste & Recycling Scheme
• Best Greener & Healthier Lifestyles (Food) Scheme
• Birmingham Connected Sustainable Travel Award

Each category will then have a sub-category for business, community and education establishment entries.

The 12 winners and one overall winner who is judged to have completely embraced the ethos of the awards will be announced at a grand ceremony taking place in the Banqueting Suite at the Council House on June 5.

The judging panel will be made up of representatives from different council departments such as Public Health, the Smarter Choices travel team, Climate Change and Environment as well as external partners including Veolia and MEBC (Midlands Environmental Business Company).

Applications forms are available to download from today (April 16) from the Making Birmingham Greener website: http://greencity.birmingham.gov.uk/. The closing date for the receipt of application forms is May 22.
