New posts to tackle Coroner’s Office delays

Following a meeting with senior coroner Louise Hunt, Birmingham City Council Leader Cllr John Clancy has announced plans to fund three new posts at Birmingham Coroner’s Office.

Responding to services about delayed inquests, recruitment is planned for:

  • A coroner investigator
  • Two coroner support officers

Cllr Clancy said: “I met with the senior coroner last month and we discussed concerns that had been raised with me in relation to the coroner’s service. One of the things we identified was the number of staff. Having had that discussion we’ve looked at ways that we can contribute from Birmingham City Council to provide extra members of staff. I think this is an appropriate thing to do that will assist things. It won’t solve things overnight but Birmingham City Council will be making extra resources available.”

NB: The costs will be met from the council’s Contingencies Fund.
