Response to Holding Notice on Birmingham Development Plan

The Government has issued a Holding Notice on the Birmingham Development Plan using its powers under the new Housing and Planning Act.

Councillor John Clancy, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said:

“Clearly it is very disappointing that the Government has chosen to make this decision in spite of the positive outcome of the independent planning inquiry. The Inspector supported the city’s growth strategy, including the release of Green Belt. We will now work with the Government to try to resolve this issue as soon as possible.”

Councillor Ian Ward, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, said:

“The Birmingham Development Plan is a critical document for the future growth of the city. The Government’s intervention will delay the delivery of much needed housing and employment land. The plan is vital to support the city’s economy and meet the needs of our growing population. We want to minimise delays to the adoption of the plan and ensure we can fully implement the city’s growth strategy.”
