Sky Ride returns to Birmingham

Olympic star Jess Varnish will join thousands of cyclists in Birmingham next month when the hugely successful Sky Ride returns to the city’s streets.

The fourth annual Sky Ride Birmingham will take place on Sunday 15 September (10am to 4pm) when people will have the opportunity to cycle traffic-free streets in the city centre.

And this year’s Sky Ride Birmingham is an accessible cycling event, with Cycling Projects offering adapted bikes for hire and to support disabled people wishing to take part.

Great Britain Cycling Team athlete Jess Varnish will be supporting the event and has urged the people of Birmingham to join the fantastic free event.

She said: “Cycling is a fun way to get fit and active. You don't have to be an Olympic athlete to take part in this fun event, just turn up, get on your bike and join me as we cycle around the streets of Birmingham.”

Cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Steve Bedser, added: “This is a fun event for all the family that helps many people rekindle their love of cycling. As a keen cyclist myself I’d love to see more people in Birmingham switching from four wheels to two and events like Sky Ride help promote the joys of cycling.

“Birmingham City Council recently secured £17 million to increase cycling routes across the city, so there’s never been a better time to get on your bike.”
