Motorists advised of city centre road changes
A new set of temporary road measures supporting the Paradise redevelopment in Birmingham city centre is due to come into operation this weekend.
Starting on May 10, there will be access changes affecting the Paradise Circus gyratory, Sand Pits/Parade, Broad Street and Summer Row. New diversionary routes for road traffic will be signed and in place.
The road measures, which will continue until November 2015, mean that there will no longer be a circular road system around Paradise.
There will still be access to Charlotte Street and Fleet Street from Parade/ Sand Pits, and Summer Row businesses will remain open and accessible for business as usual.
A route for pedestrians and cyclists through the Paradise redevelopment area will be maintained at all times.
Birmingham City Council is advising the travelling public to expect delays and to plan journeys accordingly. People should use public transport, walk or cycle whenever possible. It is Living Streets Walk to Work Week 11-15 May, so an ideal opportunity to beat the traffic and enjoy the benefits of walking, even for part of the journey.
If you have to travel by car, consider alternative routes and times for your journey or whether car sharing is a viable option. The early phases of the Paradise redevelopment involve the demolition of existing buildings in preparation for new construction. The programme represents a £500 million investment in the future of Birmingham and is expected to create around 12,000 new jobs in the city centre, as well as significant improvements to walking, cycling, bus and tram routes.
