New Homes for Heroes
Birmingham City Council and the Ministry of Defence have announced the provision of 64 new homes for military medical personnel in the city.
The homes in Longbridge and Kings Norton are for service personnel based at the Queen Elizabeth hospital who care for injured soldiers.
Fifty eight properties were built through the council's Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust by developers Kier Partnerships and Galliford Try in partnership with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), which is responsible for the Ministry of Defence's (MOD) land and property. A further six properties have been provided by Orion Developments.
The new homes represent a £12.8 million investment in Birmingham by the Ministry of Defence and demonstrate the high quality and value for money provided the Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust and its partners.
Councillor Ali, cabinet member for development, jobs and skills, said: “I am delighted that Birmingham City Council and its partners have provided these high quality homes for service personnel in the city. I'm really proud that the council is working with the MoD and we will continue to look at ways this type of housing for both current and former armed services personnel. This shows our commitment to our armed forces.”
Brigadier Martin Boswell, DIO's Head of Operations Accommodation, said: “The MOD recognises the importance of providing decent living standards in maintaining morale and has purchased these homes as these homes form part of a much wider initiative across the whole of the UK to provide high quality modern accommodation for Service personnel and their families. These homes have been made available for personnel who treat military patients injured on operations and although not all of the properties have been completed yet, the majority that have are already occupied and the families are reaping the benefits of efficient homes with the promise of lower running costs.”
Chris King, managing director for Kier Partnership Homes, added: “We are proud to be making a difference in our local community, working in partnership with BMHT to not only deliver high quality homes for the MOD, but also driving forward regeneration in Birmingham. The homes have been designed to Code for Sustainable Housing Level 4, providing a larger living space, and lower running costs.”
