Birmingham election updates on WhatsApp

in News

Birmingham City Council has launched an election updates service via mobile messaging service WhatsApp.

In a bid to engage a wider audience in the democratic process, the council is sending voter information, candidate lists results and other election news via Whatsapp - both in the build-up to May 7 and throughout the General Election and local elections counts.

The service was launched on April 24 and the initial response has been very positive.

Birmingham Returning Officer and Council Chief Executive, Mark Rogers, said: “Over the last few years our online election updates and results via Twitter have proved extremely popular and we’ve decided to extend that coverage to reach a different audience through WhatsApp.

“The initial uptake has been encouraging and we’ll assess how this project goes before deciding if WhatsApp could be used for other projects.”
